My Bank Account is written by Stephen Leacock. He is one of the most popular mockers and article writer. His witty articles are the best example of sardonic Mockery. The est of his stories like Brown Eyes, Freedom Cost, Behind the Table are written in first person style.
“Confidence with fear lead to mockery.”
The present story is about an absent-minded and outwardly foolish gentleman who is the writer himself. In a way, the writer describes his own senseless behaviours in bank where he went to deposit his surplus money in the form of fifty six dollars, in a highly strange and unexpected manner. He made an about turn at the “receipt counter” of the bank demanding all his deposited amount back.
In his humorous story the writer tells us about his experience of opening a bank account. He wanted to keep his extra money in a bank as his salary had increased. The writer asked the bank accountant rather secretly to let him see the manager. The accountant brought the manager to him. The writer told the manager to his surprise that he wanted to see him alone. The manager thought the writer had something serious to tell him. He asked him if he was a detective or secret man. The writer replied that he only wanted to deposit his money. When the manager asked him if it was a big amount, he answered that it was fifty-six dollars. The manager sent him to the accountant rather angrily as it was a small amount.
The accountant gave the writer’s fifty-six dollars to clerk who opened an account for him. The writer was upset to see all his money gone to the bank people. He said that he wanted to draw (take) six dollars. He was given a cheque book. Instead of drawing six dollars he drew out all his fifty-six dollars. Then he rushed out of the bank. The bank people laughed at his foolishness.
Thus, the drama of the deposit and withdrawal of the whole amount was over within an hour or so. The main characters, the author, the manager and the accountant played their roles most enjoyably. The chorus, that is, the bank clerks and workers gave its comment in the form of the resounding laughter. We, as reader still hear it as we go through the marvellous story.
SUMMARY OF THE MIRACLE OF RADIO
The Miracle of Radio is a chapter taken from Messrs Even bros, publication entitled idea
that moved the world. It tells us about the discovery that light waves and electric discovery was made by Maxwell the British Scientist and was proved by Hartz, the German Scientist. Lodge to put this knowledge to practical use and Marconi. the Italian Scientist succeeded in inventing instruments for this use. It was his discovery which made this possible useful inventions as Radio television, radar and telescope.
The radio today, like TV is a magic invention that connects us with distant speak and performers without any wire. Till the end of the 19th century the world did not hava system or wireless communication. At the start of the 20th century the radio came into existe and it was a revolutionary invention. .
Three scientist, Maxwell, Hertz and Marconi made possible the use of electrical energy the wireless and radio. Maxwell thought about wireless and found its principles . Hertz the waves that work wireless. Marconi invents the instruments that were worked with Max ideas and Hertz’s waves. Thus telegraph, telephone and radio became possible. Others like a Lodef also developed the use of electrical energy. Maxwell gave the theory that electric light waves move at the same speed. Hertz proved Maxwell’s theory. He showed that signals be sent through electric waves.
Marconi proved that signals or sounds could be sent from one pole to another without using a wire. he used some instruments like the telegraph key and a telephone reciever to prove this. He sent messages across the British Channel with the help of wireless. In 1901, he sent messages from England to New Foundland, 3,000 miles away, through wireless. Thus he made possible the use of wireless on ships at sea etc, in 1924, he showed that wireless or radio wave could travel in straight line. It made the use of sound and speech on the wireless or radio possible. Later, the radio was introduced in almost every country. All countries and the different parts of a particular country got connected through the radio or wireless TV is a later development in the field of wireless communication. The radio and TV together have made one life colourful, interesting and quite purposeful .
